Teeth Brushing Tips From Your Family Dentist

As a local family dentist, we treat a lot of patients that suffer from cavities and infections due to a lack of proper oral hygiene.  We understand that brushing and flossing isn’t necessarily fun, but it still needs to be done throughout the day.  Taking care of your teeth at home is the best way to prevent getting cavities later on.

Make your teeth brushing time count by using these tips:

  • Don’t use a wet brush. If your toothbrush isn’t getting dry in between uses, it is probably because of where you are storing it.  By throwing it in a drawer or leaving it on the counter, you may be creating the perfect environment for bacteria to grow. Buy a toothbrush holder to store your brush in so that it will dry properly and stay clean.
  • Buy a new one.  Your toothbrush should be replaced every three months.  This way the bristles won’t fray.  In order to get the best clean, you need to have a toothbrush that is in good condition, and this will make sure that you do.  We will also give you a new toothbrush when you visit our family dentist office for a teeth cleaning.
  • Use a soft brush.  Avoid using hard toothbrushes so that your teeth will stay in good condition.  Hard toothbrushes can strip the enamel off of your teeth.  Enamel is the hard outer layer that protects your teeth by covering the porous dentin underneath.  If it wears away, your teeth will become sensitive and may hurt while eating or drinking.  A hard toothbrush can also irritate your gums so switch to a soft one right away.
  • Brush in circles.  Make a circular pattern when brushing your teeth instead of brushing from back to front.  This will get your teeth cleaner and prevent gum irritation.  If you use an electric toothbrush, you can accomplish the same thing with less work because the bristles move automatically.
  • Use fluoride. When you brush your teeth, use toothpaste that contains fluoride.  This mineral can help to strengthen your teeth and prevent cavities.  We offer fluoride treatments to kids visiting our family dentist office and using this type of toothpaste can further strengthen teeth in between visits.
  • Frequency. You should brush throughout the day, after every meal.  This way sugar can be removed from your teeth quickly, reducing your risk of getting a cavity.  Carry a travel size brush with you so that this is easy to do.  If you can’t brush throughout the day try rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash instead.  No matter what, make sure to brush your teeth at least every evening and in the morning.

As a family dentist, we can show you and your kids how to brush your teeth correctly when you visit our dental office.  By taking the time to learn how to brush your teeth and doing it frequently, you can keep your teeth in good health and prevent cavities and gum disease.  By combining this with professional teeth cleanings, you can stay in excellent health.
