Emergency Dentistry Tips for Treating a Dental Problem
Posted on: August 1st, 2014 by Dr. Gabor Bodnar
Many people call us looking for emergency dentistry services, and we are happy to accommodate. Unfortunately, toothaches and dental emergencies can happen at any time, and it is impossible to plan for when your tooth may become damaged. Fortunately, we are able to provide emergency treatment in our local dental office even if you didn’t have an appointment.
If you find yourself with a sudden toothache or dental problem, there are things that you can do at home, before heading into the office. Here is what you need to know:
- Toothaches. If your tooth hurts, you should start by brushing your teeth and flossing. Oftentimes a piece of food will become trapped and create pain and by simply removing the object, your tooth will feel better. If you are still in pain after doing so, call and schedule a last minute trip to the emergency dentist.
- Broken Tooth. It is fairly common and easy for a tooth to become broken or chipped. This can happen during a car wreck, fall, a household accident, or while playing sports. When it does, clean the area with warm water. You can apply gauze to the tooth if you feel that a root is exposed. Call the dentist right away so that the tooth can be restored. While waiting for your appointment to start, you should apply a cold compress to your face by the area where the tooth has become injured.
- Tooth Loss. If your tooth falls out or is knocked out, it may be savable. Locate the tooth and rinse it in warm water without scrubbing. You can then place it in a cup of milk in order to preserve it. Rinse your mouth with water as well and schedule an appointment.
When providing emergency dentistry services, we treat patients with all types of oral health issues. Since you never know when a dental emergency will strike, it is important to work with a dentist that is able to accommodate last minute requests and after hours visits. By following these tips at home, you can reduce pain and swelling while waiting for your appointment to start.
You can also help to avoid dental emergencies by practicing preventative oral health care. This includes maintaining a good oral hygiene routine of brushing and flossing throughout the day and using an antiseptic mouthwash to kill bacteria. When brushing, use toothpaste with fluoride in it so that minerals can be placed onto your teeth which will naturally strengthen them. Having your teeth cleaned twice a year will also help them to stay strong as the risk of cavities and gum disease will be greatly reduced. This is important because an oral or gum infection can weaken the teeth even further. If you or your child play sports, you can also use a mouth guard in order to keep teeth protected from injury.
